Our certification course for Adult moderate Sedation follows the ADA guidelines for moderate sedation certification course.

 

The certification course entails 60 hours of didactic training and clinical experience of minimum twenty (20) clinical cases involving moderate sedation. The course is typically offered during the weekend.
Upon completion, participants will earn sixty (60) CE hours and they will be eligible for moderate sedation certification by the Dental Board of California.

 

The 2022 schedule course dates are:

March 26-27 (In-person weekend workshop #1)

April 30-May1 (In-person weekend workshop #2)

June 4 (Virtual Zoom lecture)

June 11 (Virtual zoom lecture)

 

Course Objectives

The course is designed to meet the educational requirements for certification in the use of moderate (IV) conscious sedation for adult patients. The purpose of this course is to prepare the participant to deliver safe and effective pharmacologic moderate sedation for adult patients. At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to select optimal oral sedative regimen for a given patient and use that regimen safely.

After completing the course participants should be able to:

  1. Become familiar with the terminology of minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia.
  2. Elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of different routes of drug administration.
  3. Utilize nitrous oxide and oxygen safely in conjunction with other sedatives.
  4. Describe the pharmacokinetic principles that affect drugs used for adult oral sedation.
  5. Compare and select different drugs based on their benefits and limitations.
  6. Describe the indications, contraindications, and limitations of various drugs used for adult oral sedation.
  7. Become familiar with pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative documentation associated with adult oral sedation.
  8. Utilize proper monitoring for adult oral sedation.
  9. Manage patients during recovery period.
  10. Handle emergencies related to adult moderate sedation.
  11. Review medical history and conditions related to adult moderate sedation.

Clinical training in adult moderate sedation

 

Clinical training will involve moderate sedation administration by participants in twenty (20) adult patients.

Clinical training will occur at each participant’s practice in California.

Participants will be required to secure patients, monitors, emergency drugs and equipment, supportive staff, sedative drugs.

Instructor will offer supervision and guidance while participants perform dentistry on moderately sedated patients.

Additional didactic hours will be honored during clinical training by reviewing each clinical case before initiating treatment, and after moderate sedation has been rendered.
